Our Search and Recovery

David’s body was found and recovered from the middle of the Passaic River near 450 King George Rd. in Bernards, N.J. during the evening of March 18, 2015. The identification was made through dental records on March 19.

On Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at approximately 5:00 pm two (2) men canoeing in the Passaic River came across a red jacket located near branches. They immediately notified Bernards Township Police Department. Police later determined the existence of human remains and a multi-agency recovery operation commenced to include members of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the Long Hill Township Police Department, the Bernards Township Police Department, the Liberty Corner Fire Department, Millington Fire Department, the Parsippany Search Rescue and Recovery Team, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, the Morris County ParkPolice, Berkeley Heights Fire Department, Whippany Fire Department, Boonton Township Fire Department, Morris County Fire Coordinator, Denville Dive Team, Liberty Corner First Aid Squad. The following agencies supplied boats for the recovery: Whippany Fire Department, Millington Fire Department and Berkeley Heights Fire Department.



The Search

Background:  When David went missing

The Long Hill Twp. Police Dept. initiated a massive search for David Bird on the evening of January 11, 2014. To date, the search effort has involved:

  • multiple K-9 units in various locations
  • extensive search on foot by volunteers and law enforcement
  • horseback
  • ATV’s
  • NJ State Police helicopter on multiple occasions
  • crop plane
  • Water Rescue divers
  • kayaks, canoes and row boats
Areas searched include:
  • buildings and land surrounding Bird’s residence
  • Hicks Tract wooded area
  • portions of the Passaic River
  • sections of the National Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge
  • walking trails in Morris and Somerset Counties
  • railroad stations
  • roadways he may have traveled on

A detailed intelligence search of Bird’s personal records has been conducted by law enforcement professionals of the Morris County Prosecutors Office.
